WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert has expressed optimism about the ongoing negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement (CBA) between the league and the Women’s National Basketball Players Association (WNBPA). Engelbert emphasized the importance of reaching a “transformational” deal that benefits all parties involved.
The current CBA, established in 2020, is set to expire on October 31, 2025. In anticipation, the WNBPA opted out of the agreement in October 2024. They aimed to negotiate improved terms that reflect the league’s recent growth and the players’ contributions. Key issues on the table include increased salaries, enhanced benefits, and a more equitable economic model.
Players Continue to Push for Equity
High-profile WNBA players have long been vocal about the need for salary reform and better investment in players. Las Vegas Aces’ star A’ja Wilson previously tweeted, “We’re not asking for NBA money. We’re asking for fair money.” Phoenix Mercury’s Brittney Griner has also emphasized the need for higher pay, especially after years of players being forced to play overseas during the WNBA off-season to supplement their incomes.
Breanna Stewart of the New York Liberty even proposed a solution: “How can we take better care of our players year-round? Charter flights, better travel, better pay—it’s all connected.”
League Focused on Sustainability
Engelbert has stated that the league is committed to negotiating directly with the players and their representatives, rather than through the media. She highlighted the need for a sustainable economic model that supports the league’s expansion and long-term success. With the WNBA experiencing record-breaking viewership and engagement, both the league and the players are motivated to finalize an agreement that ensures continued growth and fairness.
Looking Ahead
As discussions progress, stakeholders remain hopeful that a new CBA will be established, setting the stage for a prosperous future for the WNBA and its athletes.
