Kemi “TRUTHIS” Karim has announced the third annual “A GREAT DAY IN BROOKLYN.” The Founder and Director of Community Engagement at TRUTHIS Studios says the event is set to take place on Sunday, August 11, 2024 at Herbert Von King Park, 670 Lafayette Ave., Brooklyn, NY, from 2 PM to 7 PM. This public art initiative is dedicated to connecting, healing, and amplifying the voices of NYC luminaries in the creative industry. In collaboration with YCO, the event will focus on the theme “No More Burnout.”
About the event
This year’s edition of “A GREAT DAY IN BROOKLYN” promises to be the best yet. In partnership with YCO, the event will include a Back 2 School giveaway to provide students with essential learning tools. The focus on arts, wellness, and programming has led to the curation of the annual AGDIB live arts and cultural programming fest, aiming to serve the needs of creatives of colour in NYC. The day is designed to be a communal space for healing, education, and forward-thinking conversation, evaluating how art can be used for our liberation. YCO is a non-profit organisation that connects current leaders with future ones.
Brooklyn Book Bodega has donated over 150 books to be distributed throughout the event. In line with the event theme, the “NO MORE BURNOUT” meditation and massage activation at the newly installed Hanging Gardens will be led by Thai Massage Therapist Lexis Priestess. Guests will also enjoy performances by emerging artists such as Precious Jewel and N3GRO L3AGU3. DJ Rage.inald will be in charge of the sounds.
Key highlights to look forward to
One of the event’s highlights will be the panel discussion, “Why Are Artists Burning Out? + Preserving Our History,” moderated by Truthis in conversation with Jeary and Nico Kartel. This discussion aims to explore the multifaceted challenges and essential work involved in being an artist, cultural historian, and documentarian, with a focus on identifying and healing burnout.
Participants can RSVP for the event through Partiful. The event is free and open to the public, and food and light refreshments will be available while supplies last. This year’s “Great Day in Brooklyn” underscores the importance of creating a space where creatives and thought leaders of colour can come together to build sustainable futures in their communities.
Now in its third year, the event continues its mission to foster an ecosystem of sustainability in the arts. “I attend many events, but my favourites are community-based events. AGDIB embodies that so well. You can tell it is curated with communal and joyous intentions, and I made so many amazing connections that day!” said Bianca Cintron when reflecting on the 2023 edition of “A Great Day in Brooklyn.”
