Tina Knowles, the matriarch behind global superstars Beyoncé and Solange, is stepping into her own well-deserved spotlight with the release of her new memoir, Matriarch. Dropping earlier this week under One World (an imprint of Random House Publishing Group), the 432-page book offers an intimate look at Knowles’ journey from growing up in segregated Galveston, Texas, to becoming a powerhouse businesswoman, fashion designer, philanthropist—and one of the most influential mothers in music history.
Why Tina Wrote Matriarch Now
In an interview with Interview Magazine’s Ellen Pompeo, Tina opened up about why now was the right time to finally tell her story.
“People had approached me about it before and I said no,” she explained. “Writing a book is really baring your soul, and I was so protective of my family. They’re so private that I was like, ‘I’ll be writing a book and I’ll be trying to censor it myself.'”
But after years of therapy and turning 70, Tina decided it was time.
“I got tired of everybody else telling our story and judging us,” she shared. “All the misconceptions and all the lies, I just wanted to tell the story myself.”
She added, “Turning 70, you get to the point where you really don’t give a s**t about being careful.”
Tina also revealed that Matriarch serves as a “piece of history” for her family—something for her children and grandchildren to have forever. Thanks to years of therapy and decades of keeping journals, Tina was able to recount deeply personal moments from her childhood, including her struggles with racism and growing up under the watch of strict nuns.
What Matriarch Covers
Matriarch isn’t just a collection of memories—it’s a candid exploration of Tina’s experiences growing up during segregation, her battles with breast cancer, and her unwavering fight to create a better life for herself and her family.
She also dives into her family’s roots, including ancestors who were enslaved, and her tireless advocacy for education, women’s empowerment, and community-building.
The memoir already has serious buzz: it was selected for Oprah’s Book Club and is being praised for its raw honesty and resilience. Tina is embarking on a nine-city book tour, with guest conversations featuring icons like Michelle Obama and Tyler Perry.
Star-Studded Audiobook
If you prefer to listen, Matriarch is also available as an audiobook narrated by Tina herself—with special contributions from Beyoncé, Solange, Kelly Rowland, and Angie Beyincé. It’s truly a family affair and a must-listen for fans.
