For many years, women in anime were often placed in the background, either as subjects for the male gaze or as damsels in distress. Luckily, as anime becomes more mainstream, we’re seeing the development of female characters who don’t need saving—they do the saving. Over the years, female anime characters have evolved, and we are so thankful. These characters showcase how powerful and dynamic women in anime can be, and we love it. They face challenges head-on and are fiercely independent and strong. In honor of Women’s History Month, we are listing some of our favorite female anime characters who take charge and are total bada**es.
1. Yoruichi Shihouin – Bleach
Perhaps one of the most powerful and well-known female anime characters, Yoruichi is a former captain of the 2nd Division of the Gotei 13. She is also the former commander of the Onmitsukidō, the Soul Society’s Black Ops-like assassination squad. An undisputed master of flash step, she is renowned for her prowess, agility, speed, and Shunko fighting style. It’s clear that her resume is stacked! She’s number one on our list for a reason.
2. Michiko Malandro – Michiko & Hatchin
This is a Michiko Malandro stan account! How could we not stan a character like Michiko? She’s bold, vibrant, beautiful, fashionable, and an absolute powerhouse. Michiko is rebellious and brash, but she will also go to the ends of the Earth to protect the people she cares about. You look up bada** in the dictionary, and her picture will surely be the first thing you see.
3. Atsuko Jackson – Michiko & Hatchin
We couldn’t make this list without including Michiko’s former childhood friend and rival, Atsuko Jackson. Atsuko is a no-nonsense, tough, and sharp-witted policewoman who never fails to serve a look while hunting down Michiko. She is the definition of a bada**—a woman who turned her life around but still walks to the beat of her own drum. As an antagonist, she is the perfect match for Michiko; they may be different, but their bond will always remain.
4. Maki Zen’in – Jujutsu Kaisen
Although she’s a newcomer, Maki Zen’in has already earned the title of a fierce and strong female anime character. She’s the ultimate underdog, and who doesn’t love a good underdog story? From the start, Maki has demonstrated unwavering strength and fearlessness against her opponents, despite having no cursed energy. Her mastery of weapons and combat expertise make her an absolute force to be reckoned with—and impossible not to root for.
5. Canary – HunterxHunter
Canary is a fan favorite—a loyal friend to Killua Zoldyck and a ruthless bodyguard. Though she is quiet and reserved, she is also fiercely caring and protective of the people she loves. Her combat skills are impressive, and let’s be real—she’s also adorable. Including her on this list was an absolute no-brainer!
6. Dorothy – The Great Pretender
We love a smart, cunning, and beautiful protagonist! Although she’s not the main character throughout the show, she is a core member of Team Confidence. With her charm and quick thinking, she proves to be one of the most charismatic characters, always sealing the deal on every con they pull.
7. Yor Forger – Spy x Family
Simply put, Yor is a force! She’s strong, a skilled assassin, and a fierce protector. Despite her lethal abilities, she’s also kind and caring, always getting things done with precision. Throughout the show, Yor proves to be a devoted mother to Anya and a loyal wife to Loid, willing to do whatever it takes to keep them safe. She’s stealthy, strategic, and never fails to take down her opponent—all while keeping her double life intact!
8. Mikasa Ackerman – Attack on Titan
Mikasa is one of the strongest warriors in anime. She’s fearless and never hesitates when fighting a Titan, sometimes outshining seasoned professionals. She’s committed and passionate and is never afraid to dive headfirst into attack mode. She is the definition of a bada** and has earned a place on our list.
9. Revy- Black Lagoon
Revy is as tough of a character as they come. The Chinese-American gunfighting rebel is full of sass and won’t hesitate to get in your face. Her sharp wit and deadly, charming personality will make you fall inlove with her instantly.
10. Olivier Mira Armstrong- Full Metal Alchemist Brotherhood
Olivier is so fierce, it’s almost unreal. She’s a powerful and fearsome leader whose mere presence commands any room she walks into. Showing no mercy to her enemies, she remains calm, calculated, and never lets emotions cloud her judgment. With her razor-sharp tongue and highly combative nature, it’s no surprise she’s a fan favorite. She may be last on our list, but she is certainly not least!
