Spring is here, which means silk press season is long gone! Even though the weather is getting warmer, you don’t have to suffer through excessively frizzy and dry hair. Utilizing the right spring haircare routine tips can help.

In 2024, the spring season is all about being outside and having fun. However, regardless of your hair type, no one wants to leave the house with limp curls or a ball of frizz on their head. Luckily, there are some steps you can take to prevent dry and frizzy hair! Here are five spring haircare routine tips to keep your mane healthy and moisturized.

1. Use a T-shirt to dry your hair before reaching for your hot tools.

The Black Girl handbook basically states that you should wear a bonnet, scarf, or durag to sleep. These tools keep your hairstyle tight and intact. However, there are more steps you can take to prevent frizz, breakage, and dry hair.

When you are ready to dry your hair after washing it, start by using a microfiber towel or a t-shirt to soak up excess water. According to Mimi et Mina, using a regular cotton bath towel can damage the hair cuticle, which causes frizz. Once your hair is damp, use your go-to hot tool. Additionally, purchase a silk pillowcase to sleep on at night to protect your tresses.

2. Deep condition your hair on wash days.

You may already use a conditioner on wash days, but it is best to opt for a deep conditioner during the spring season as well. As the temperatures continue to rise, it is imperative to moisturize your hair as much as possible. This is especially true if you have naturally dry or low-porosity hair. Be sure to purchase a deep conditioner that centers your hair type!

3. Oil your scalp regularly.

Applying oil to your scalp is not reserved for braids under your wig! Those with dry, itchy scalps may experience more symptoms as the warmer months approach. Additionally, a dry scalp leads to dry hair! Fortunately, oiling your scalp regularly can help ease the irritation. There are many options, from peppermint to tea tree oil, that are excellent for dry scalps.

4. Get a protective hairstyle.

It may seem like a simple solution, and that is because it is! Whether it is braids, twists, faux locs, sew-ins, or wigs, protective styles give you and your hair a break. Not only does your hair get to rest from manipulation, but you also get a break from dealing with frizz and moisturizing your hair. This is a great option for those who sweat. Avoid stylists who braid too tight and oil your scalp frequently!

5. Avoid sulfate shampoos.

You may have heard folks with natural hair throwing out their sulfate shampoos. While you don’t need to throw it out completely, using sulfate shampoos infrequently can prevent dry hair. According to Curlsmith, going sulfate-free can result in retaining your hair’s natural moisture. However, if your hair is prone to product buildup, it is safe to clarify with a sulfate shampoo every four to five washes. Whether you use a sulfate-free shampoo or a co-wash in between clarifying washes is up to you.

Getting through the spring season does not mean you have to keep your hair covered to protect your hair. These spring haircare tips are applicable throughout the year to keep your hair healthy and moisturized!
