Ok, so I might be a little late with this post since I observed this trend 2 years ago, but has anyone noticed how almost every guy has more of a liking to women with natural, curly hair? Now I’m not against this, but I have to really question, why? I can go on my Instagram and see 10 guys post a meme relating to their appreciation for voluptuous, curly hair. Or in some of my personal relationships, I have had male friends tell me that they just LOVE girls with beautiful, springy hair. They say how having curly hair is better than weave and it shows how “real” women are. But now why all of a sudden? And what does hair have anything to do with the personal relationship or non-personal relationship you might have with a woman?
I remember in my childhood experiences, growing up I would get made fun of for having big, wavy-curly hair. It was super big and all over the place. It was practically unmanageable. My mother would have trouble combing through my hair…that was until she gave me a relaxer. From then on people’s attitudes towards me changed. I wasn’t the little ragamuffin tomboy girl running around with the boys anymore. I was some-what girly and now my guy friends had to find a new way to approach me in regards to playing sports with them. It wasn’t until high school that I noticed a change with the females and the way they styled their hair. I was no longer surrounded by females with straight hair. I can remember walking into school one day and seeing this girl with big, curly, beautiful, voluptuous hair. I thought she was so beautiful. She had this aura about her. A year later, one of my close friends went completely natural and I took a liking to her big, curly hair as well. She would braid it in before she went to bed and come to school with this hair that would smell like fresh, fruity shampoo. From then on in my junior year of high school I decided to cut my hair and go all naturale.
In the midst of me going natural, I had noticed that the media started paying more attention with girls with this type of hair. Tumblr being the main source that would glorify this style. I could scroll through my tumblr and see these young women with different kinds of styles and textures for naturally wavy/curly hair. It was as if this style was no longer taboo. It was still in a way eccentric, but magnified. There were beautiful ladies of different ethnic backgrounds with a mane that was seen as this sign that shouted, “FREEDOM”. And overtime I noticed the shift in how people were more accepting of these styles. Could this have anything to do with people’s new appreciation for the Bohemian-Hippie culture? Could it be due to the new appreciation of being called a hipster and owning up to it? Could it be due to the recession that happened in 2008 and its recovery in 2012 that probably caused a lot of people to budget themselves and start shopping at thrift stores and noticing all the funky, peculiar shit from decades of the past that could now be worn differently? Or could it be because we became more accepting of people’s lifestyles, cultures, and ideals? Hmmm…
I think it’s a mixture of all that is listed and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. But feel free to give me your opinion 🙂
