After a yearlong journey, that took the Mulan crew to five continents, and though 1,000 auditions… a live-action Mulan star has been chosen!
Chinese actress Liu Yifei, also known as Crystal Liu, is Mulan in the live-action adaptation of the classic Chinese tale, Mulan directed by Niki Caro. She earned this role after going through a competitive audition that required martial arts capabilities and the ability to speak english.
Yifei is widely known as the Fairy Sister in the entertainment industry for her innocent and sweet image, she has been one of China’s most popular actresses since her debut in The Story of a Noble Family. Since her debut Yifei has starred in the Forbidden Kingdom, along with Jet Li and Jackie Chan which grossed $128 million in the box office and The Assassin, which earned her first major acting award at the Macau International Movie Festival. Most recently Yifei was seen in The Chinese Widow, which opened the Shanghai International Film Festival in June.
Liu also served as brand ambassador for labels like Pantene, Dior, Gariner, and Tissot. She is with William Morris Entertainment and David Chen represents her.
