Michael Cox, also known as MikeQ, is a DJ, musician, and music producer. His journey into the ballroom scene began in 2003, at the age of 17, when he was introduced to the vibrant world of ballroom at an LGBT+ party at The Globe, a now-closed venue in Newark. This early exposure laid the foundation for his career, and he started releasing music in 2004, eventually becoming a member of the House of LaBeija.  With over 20 years of experience in DJing and producing music for ballroom events, he has become a prominent figure in the ballroom community. His music style has been described as “ecstatic ballroom house” by the New York Times and as “Spine Snapping” by Resident Advisor and Fact.
MikeQ has performed as a DJ in significant cities, including London, Los Angeles, Tokyo, Moscow, Paris, Mexico, Australia, and Seoul. His notable achievements include DJing on all three seasons of HBO Max’s “Legendary,” opening for Beyoncé’s Renaissance World Tour, and having his work sampled on an album. He is also the founder of the first ballroom record label, Qween Beat, and organized the “House Of Vogue” event in NYC, which played a foundational role in shaping the current ballroom scene in New York City.
MikeQ’s contributions to the music industry go beyond the dance floor. He actively mentors emerging artists and collaborates with various organizations to promote inclusivity within the music industry. His dedication to preserving and evolving ballroom culture has earned him numerous accolades and a dedicated following. MikeQ’s innovative approach to music production, fusing traditional ballroom elements with contemporary sounds, continues to push the boundaries of the genre. As a trailblazer in his field, MikeQ remains committed to amplifying the voices of marginalized communities and ensuring the enduring vibrancy of ballroom music for future generations.
