Carlos FuBu Basquiat has had a lifelong passion for dance, starting from his early years. Raised in a Puerto Rican family in The Bronx, music wasn’t just around him – it was in his veins.
At 11, Carlos (birth name Carlos Ivan Irizarry) joined a performance group in The Bronx called “La Luz.” Under the guidance of Anthony Rodriguez, whom Carlos considers a significant influence, he explored dance styles such as Jazz, Salsa, Ballet, Flamenco, Afro-Cuban, and street styles.
Upon reaching 18, Carlos transitioned to the adult team (“La Santa Luz”), performing globally. He also developed a keen interest in Vogueing, a modern house dance style originating from the Harlem Ballroom scene.
Having toured the US, Turkey, and China with “La Santa Luz”, 21-year-old Carlos signed with an agency, venturing into the entertainment industry.
Now at 40, residing in Los Angeles, Carlos has established a successful career choreographing for renowned artists like Beyoncé, Madonna, Ariana Grande, and others. He has appeared in various campaigns and was part of the show Legendary on HBO Max.
Having spent 11 years in Los Angeles, Carlos is an integral member of the Undeniable Haus Of Basquiat and The Overall Kiki Father of FuBu. He teaches Vogue professionally and engages with the Ballroom Scene in Los Angeles, fostering a supportive and creative space for the LGBTQIA+ community to showcase their talents.
